El mar, para el mundo antiguo, fue un espacio de tránsitos, encuentros e interacciones.Podríamos buscar su origen en los diferentes relatos fundacionales que trataron de hallar unaexplicación a la existencia de esa masa de agua salada prácticamente infinita. Pero, más allá detales narraciones, constituyó un territorio mítico donde determinadas figuras sagradas y otrascriaturas de carácter legendario tuvieron a su merced el destino de aquellas personas que seatrevían a surcarlo. Se diría que esa pulsión ancestral es la que subyace en esta exposición de Cristina Córdova.
A medio camino entre los ritos de las culturas mediterráneas y las caribeñas, laartista nos sumerge en un ámbito acuático dentro del cual una galería de personajes alberga ensus formas los reflejos de ese pasado, aunque sin dejar a un lado las realidades y los testimoniosde un presente no tan ajeno. Es en dicha dicotomía, precisamente, donde el mar juega su papel decreador y depositario de una memoria común: no es casualidad, en efecto, que de su espuma(re)surja una Venus anacrónica, ni tampoco que otras figuras—cabezas, fragmentoscorporales—parezcan rememorar a aquellos seres, divinos o no, fruto de un subconscientecolectivo tan remoto como actual.
¿Cómo deberíamos, pues, embarcarnos en este mar rebosantede murmullos y ecos? ¿De qué modo habríamos de ocupar un hueco en esa nave repleta de vocesy anhelos? ¿Acaso no resulta paradójico que estas creaciones se materialicen a través de laacción de la tierra y el fuego? Quizá sea esta marea la que nos permita desvelar, con el ir y venirde las olas, las huellas dejadas por otras manos en el fondo (marino) de nuestra historia.

The sea, for the ancient world, was a space of passages, encounters, and interactions. Its origin could be sought in the various foundational narratives that attempted to explain the existence of that virtually infinite mass of salt water. Yet beyond such accounts, it stood as a mythical territory in which certain sacred figures and other legendary beings held at their mercy the destinies of those who dared to traverse it. It is this ancestral impulse, one might say, that underpins the exhibition by Cristina Córdova.
Positioned midway between the rituals of Mediterranean and Caribbean cultures, the artist immerses us in an aquatic realm where a gallery of characters bears in its forms the echoes of that past, while at the same time acknowledging the realities and testimonies of a not-so-distant present. It is within this very dichotomy that the sea assumes its role as creator and repository of a shared memory: it is no coincidence, indeed, that from its foam an anachronistic Venus (re)emerges, nor that other figures—heads, bodily fragments—seem to recall those beings, divine or otherwise, born of a collective subconscious as remote as it is contemporary.
How, then, are we to embark upon this sea brimming with murmurs and echoes? In what manner might we find a place within that vessel filled with voices and longings? And is it not paradoxical that these creations should materialize through the action of earth and fire? Perhaps it is this tide that allows us, through the ebb and flow of the waves, to reveal the traces left by other hands on the (marine) floor of our history.

ARTIST BIO:
Cristina Córdova es una artista contemporánea e instructora de escultura oriunda de Puerto Rico. Córdova completó su licenciatura en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y obtuvo una maestría en bellas artes en la New York State College of Ceramics de la Universidad de Alfred.
Su obra forma parte de la colección permanente del Smithsonian American Art Museum; el Everson Museum; el Mint Museum of Craft + Design; el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico; el Museo de Puerto Rico; el Asheville Art Museum y el Mobile Art Museum, entre otros.
Ha recibido numerosas becas y distinciones, entre ellas la Medalla Conmemorativa Herbert Adams de la National Sculpture Society, una beca del NC Arts Council, una beca de reconocimiento de la Virginia Groot Foundation, varios premios de la Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte de Puerto Rico, una beca United States Artist y el Maxwell-Hanrahan Craft Award 2024. En 2021, Córdova publicó Mastering Sculpture: The Figure in Clay con Quarry Books. Su obra ha sido ampliamente difundida en los principales medios de arte y cerámica, incluyendo la portada de Ceramics Monthly, y fue presentada por Craft in America, en PBS, en su episodio dedicado a la Identidad.
Cristina ha impartido cursos y realizado demostraciones en todo el mundo. Sus residencias, talleres y clases incluyen la Universidad de Harvard, la Universidad de California, la Universidad de Nebraska, la Universidad de Georgia, la Escuela de Artes de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte, Ceramistas de Reñaca en Chile, la Universidad Nacional de Australia en Canberra, Gaya Ceramics en Bali, Penland School of Crafts (NC), Haystack Mountain School (ME), Santa Fe Clay (NM), Odyssey Center for Ceramics (NC) y Anderson Ranch (CO), entre otros.

ARTIST BIO / ENGLISH:
Cristina Córdova is a contemporary artist and sculpting instructor native to Puerto Rico. Córdova completed her BA at the University of Puerto Rico, and received her MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.
She is featured in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Everson Museum, the Mint Museum of Craft + Design; the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico; the Museum of Puerto Rico the Asheville Art Museum and the Mobile Art Museum, among others.
She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the Herbert Adams Memorial Medal from The National Sculpture Society, a NC Arts Council Fellowship Grant, a Virginia Groot Foundation Recognition Grant, several International Association of Art Critics of Puerto Rico awards, a United States Artist Fellowship award and the 2024 Maxwell-Hanrahan Craft Award. In 2021 Cordova published Mastering Sculpture: The Figure In Clay by Quarry Books.
