Since antiquity, the sea has stood as a source of inspiration in Greek, Roman, Christian and African religious traditions, a symbol of power, mystery and the unknown. The sea is also part of the insular identities that shape the experience of being an islander, an identity strengthened by the boundaries drawn by surrounding waters.
Today we stand before two artists of the islands, two generations who, through their works, are bound by the sea, the archipelago, the Caribbean and the deep sense of identity they share. Their creative processes move in unison along the mystical pathways of syncretism and spirituality. Both are aware of an era they did not live, yet one they carry in their very blood, like a flowing aquatic current that gives life to their bodies and to the memories of their ancestors.
Gadiel Rivera Herrera sustains an ongoing dialogue between the sea and his work. Like Olokun, he has taken us into the depths, not of the ocean but of our own inner landscape. His recent exhibition, “Mar Adentro, Historias Profundas,” reminds us of the sea as the resting place of millions of enslaved bodies, and of the ocean as a site of memory and resistance.
His ceramics at times call forth those strange worlds that inhabit the sea, on its surface and within its depths — worlds born from his surreal imagination, enriched by anthropological inquiry, belief systems and personal experiences. At other moments, his works on paper, layered in mixed media and delicate transparencies, return us to our condition as an island and an archipelago, spaces eternally connected and shaped by the sea.
Kiván Quiñones Beltrán continues to astonish us with the maturity of his work. As a creator of found, painted or constructed objects, he leads us into a realm of hanging textiles assembled with striking intention, at times evoking shamanic dwellings or ascending altars.
For that is Kiván: a contemporary shaman, an observer who offers fleeting visions, new ways of seeing, other perspectives on what has already been contemplated. His works become altars, rituals, acts of creative devotion that guide us toward reflection on the processes that shape our Caribbean identity.
Remarkable works such as “The Prophet and His Seven Heads,” “The Rainmaker,” and the “Slate Series,” inspired by the contemplation of the sea and by the imagined act of walking upon it, reveal the artist’s capacity to envelop us and invite us into his creative ritual.
This is a compelling two person exhibition in which both island artists invite us to celebrate water as a connecting and purifying element. Whether through the imagined gesture of walking across a Caribbean sea that binds the Antillean archipelago, or through descending into its depths to reconnect with our ancestry, they present us with the dual nature of the sea — at times violent and mortal, yet equally a source of profound peace and stillness.

Kiván Quiñones Beltrán
BIO
Kiván Quiñones (b. 1997 Santurce, Puerto Rico) obtained a BA in Communications from the Universidad Sagrado Corazón in Santurce, Puerto Rico (2020). He realizes works from West African fabric, animal skulls, brooms, acrylic paint, gouache, candles, chalk, sand, river dirt, seawater, oil pastels, and bed fitters, among many other elements from his ancestral and present self, to "Redefine the language of found objects to the point that we can use them as portals."
He has been an artist in residence L’Artocarpe in Guadeloupe (2025) in The Macedonia Institute in Upstate NY (2024) and at the Alfonso Arana Foundation, in Spain/Paris (2023). Among his most recent solo exhibitions are: Sueños que me alcanzan al despertar, Souvenir 154, San Juan, PR (2025); Everything I had but couldn't keep, Recinto Cerra, San Juan, PR (2023); A Brief Narration of Destruction,El Kilómetro, San Juan PR (2023); Power Figures, Pública, San Juan PR (2022); and They Call Me, Dragon Crab Turtle, St. Louis, MO (2022). BIO
Gadiel Rivera Herrera was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he currently maintains his studio. He studied ceramics and sculpture at the San Germán Campus of the Interamerican University and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in San Juan. He has presented his artistic work in solo and group exhibitions both in Puerto Rico and abroad. From 2023 to 2024, his work is included in the exhibitions Puerto Rico Negrx at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (10/2023–9/2024); El Arte como re-existencia: lo Afropuertorriqueño at the Museo de Arte of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus (since 11/2023), whose first venue was the Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte at the Río Piedras Campus (4/2023–8/2024); as well as in Alto, ancho, fondo at the Museo de Arte Francisco Oller (8/2023–3/2024); 154 Marcas del mar at Souvenir gallery (3/2024–4/2024); and La Piel Muda el Tiempo at Hidrante art gallery (5/2024–7/2024).
He is part of the 2024 cohort of the Artist Fellowship awarded by the Latin Art Forum. He was the first Afro–Puerto Rican artist to receive the Darryl Chappell Foundation fellowship for an artist residency (2022–2023) at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR). Upon completing the residency, he exhibited his project Mar adentro, historias profundas at the Cecilia Orta Allende Gallery of the MAPR (5/2023–8/2023). He recently participated in the exhibitions About Clay at Souvenir 154 (12/2023); Small Favors at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4/2023); Paréntesis 25 años (2021) at the Corredor Afro in Loíza; Barro 11 (2019) at Art Room in San Juan; and the Trienal de Arte de Espiritualidad Afro-Antillana y Caribeña: Pa’ los Santos (2017) at Casa Escuté in Carolina. He received the Lexus Grant for his project Asientos de Negros (2006), which was exhibited at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (2007). He was also part of the exhibition Paréntesis, ocho artistas negros contemporáneos, presented at the Museo del Arsenal de la Puntilla in San Juan and at multiple venues throughout the Puerto Rican archipelago.
In 2023, he was named Artist of the Year by the Darryl Chappell Foundation and selected as a member of the International Academy of Ceramics. He has offered artistic experiences to students from elementary through university levels in a variety of academic institutions, as well as to adults in community-based projects. From 2015 to 2022, he taught Introduction to Ceramics and Wheel-Thrown Ceramics in the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.
